Background of affiliation : In December 1996 the Korean Naval Training Fleet, which is headquartered in Chinhae City, paid a courtesy visit to Kure City. This led to various exchanges taking place between the citizens of both cities ultimately resulting in this sister city affiliation.
Chinhae profile : Chinhae City is located in Kyongnam-do Province, to the south of Pusan and has a population of 130,000. It is a beautiful area, located on the coast and surrounded by mountains to the north, east and west | very similar, in fact to Kure City's environs. In 1935 many cherry trees were planted to beautify the city and now some 160,000 trees bloom each April. The Naval Port Festival held every year at this time is well known throughout the country because of this. The city's major industries include shipbuilding, heavy industry and fisheries and in recent years, it has embarked on projects to develop the port facility and housing complexes. The city enters the 21st century full of vitality and prospects. |
